New Delhi: On the occasion of National Education Day, NIEPA organized its 15th Maulana Azad Memorial Lecture on last days at Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The invited chief guest for the event was former Rajya Sabha member, Hon’ble Shri Tarun Vijay, Former Editor, Panchajanya and Former Chairman of National Monuments Authority.

The lecture was chaired by Prof. Murlimanohar Pathak, Vice-Chancellor, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University. The event was held under the overall guidance and leadership of Prof. Shashikala Wanjari, Vice-chancellor, NIEPA and Shri Surya Narayan Mishra, Registrar, NIEPA and was coordinated by Prof. A. K. Singh, Head, Department of Educational Policy, NIEPA.

The critical role of education in the process of nation-building and making India tread towards the path of self-reliance is undeniable. This inherent essence of education was very pertinently highlighted by the Hon’ble Chief Guest Shri Tarun Vijay. Underscoring the significance of great thinkers like Gautam Buddha, Chanakya, Adi Shankaracharya, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and highlighting the important contributions of Shri Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the Chief Guest very eloquently emphasized on the importance of the event and how our country should become a self-reliant, and a prosperous nation.
Raising a very prominent question of what is the aim of education, the Chief Guest pertinently emphasized that we can follow the path of self-reliance only when we know and value our own identity as an Indian and the innumerable symbolic expressions it generates through its tricolor flag, its rivers, and its very own soil. Education helps in discerning between the routine and the higher order awareness and thinking and acts as a catalyst for nation building and a sustainable and harmonious living.

It was emphasized that one should first know the richness and appreciate the profound diversity of our country which are important stepping stones towards nation building. Being educated merely for the sake of degrees and jobs will only be the instrumental value of education. It is widely agreed upon that our country was self-reliant in different domains of knowledge, and it was, in fact, a beacon for knowledge production and dissemination. With the colonial invasion, the Indigenous systems of knowledge were destroyed, thus leaving the younger generations oblivious to our rich educational heritage. This needs to be revived so that the people of the country are aware and acknowledge the rich contributions of our leaders, thinkers and scientists. What is required today is knowing about our own nation’s rich legacy and its glorious past, which is a critical step towards nation-building.

India has been experiencing remarkable growth across all sectors, advancing closer to the vision of Viksit Bharat. Initiatives like Start Up India, encouraging research in Science and Technology etc. and introducing vocational education right from school education are important steps towards making India self-reliant. He also laid emphasis on the critical role of family and the values inculcated to the children, and how home is the first university of any child and mother tongue as the first medium to understand the world. Invoking great philosophers like Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo, Shri Tarun Vijay highlighted the overarching significance of respecting our diversity and unconditional love towards our nation.

The National Education Policy 2020 proposes significant changes to the entire education system, including governance, regulation, and quality, to address the country's long-standing developmental needs. It emphasizes that the reforms outlined in this policy will not only aid in nation-building but also contribute to creating a self-reliant education ecosystem and foster an equitable and just society.

Prof. Shashikala Wanjari, Vice Chancellor, NIEPA emphasized on unlocking the immense potential of the nation’s youth through different avenues as they are the critical stakeholders in making our country self-reliant. She further highlighted that given the country’s demographic dividend, we should reap maximum benefits by empowering the youth.

The event culminated with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Shri Surya Narayan Mishra, Registrar, NIEPA. The occasion, which marks the National Education Day, is one of the key highlights of the Institute every year, and eminent speakers are invited to engage in a meaningful dialogue on critical issues in education and public policy.
